Design by Competition: Making Design Competition Work
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge Univ Pr (Trd) (01 April, 1999)
Author: Jack L. Nasar
Average review score:

The best book I've read about twentieth century architecture
The best book I've read on design competitions. In fact, the best book I've read about architecture. A must read for anyone interested in the field

If you liked Wolfe's From Bauhaus to our house, read this
I've wondered about the trophy architecture I've seen in my city and elsewhere. As did Tom Wolfe in From Bauhaus to our house, Design by Competition goes beyond the publicity to tell the true story: The emperor's wearing no clothes. Nasar packs the book with facts and anecdotes about flaws in competition designs through history, and the disastrous results of a Peter Eisenman competition winning design. If you liked Wolfe's book, you'll love this one.

A must read
A compelling and comprehensive book about the problems with design competition architecture and signature architecture. It analyzes competition successes and failures through history; and provides a detailed analysis of Peter Eisenman's competition winning design for the Wexner Center, a full blown disaster that the critics loved. He shows that the emperor is wearing no clothers. It is a must read for any citizen concerned about their built environment and for anyone involved in a design competition--sponsors, jurors, competitors, and concerned citizens.

Columbus and Other Cannibals: The Wetiko Disease of Exploitation, Imperialism, and Terrorism
Published in Paperback by Autonomedia (December, 1992)
Author: Jack D. Forbes
Average review score:

One of the most important books I've read
I agree with both previous reviewers that the book is an extraordinary indictment of the dominant culture. But I got something else from this book as well. I read this that Forbes is saying that one of the reasons civilization is killing the planet is because of a spiritual illness with a physical vector. If I get the flu and then cough all over you, you might then get the flu, with all of its symptoms. If I have the cannibal sickness and I cough (or somehow otherwise transfer the disease to you) you will have to consume the souls of others in order to survive. You will become a vampire. Or to putthis another way, you will become a conquistador, a pornographer, a slaver, a businessman. I read this not only as a metaphor, but as a possible description of how things really are. And he makes a very convincing case. Wonderful and important book by a very wise man.

It's about culture, not race
The previous reviewer missed the point of this brilliant book by Dr. Jack Forbes of UC Davis. It's about how the "white culture" (really referred to by Forbes as "European culture") is predatory and planet-destructive, not how white "people" are. This book is brilliant and insightful, a clean revisiting of the history of the Americas from the point of view of indigenous peoples, and not at all racist. Highly recommended!

The White way or the wrong way...
Paints the White man as a disease , a cancer eating the earth and its inhabitants with a demonic appetite. More corectly, the White race as a virus. A virus performs no other function but to replicate itself endlessly. Whites come in contact with a culture and replicate themselves, forcing the natives to adopt white religeon, white customs, white goverment, white culture, white calendar, and if any refuse...like the indians, aztecs, etc etc etc then they Are SLAUGHTERED. Exellent and important read.

Pedro's Journal: A Voyage With Christopher Columbus August 3, 1492 - February 14, 1493
Published in School & Library Binding by Boyds Mills Pr (September, 1991)
Authors: Pam Conrad and Peter Koeppen
Average review score:

An Outstanding Traveling Novel
Pedro's Journal by Pam Conrad is a heartwarming story about trust. Pam really brought out the characters by using lot's of detail.

Pedro is a boy who went sailing with Christopher Columbus. He's the only person on the ship who knew how to read and write.

Pam kept you reading by her creative chapter endings. She changed font and size when writing about what the characters were saying and thinking.

Anyone who reads this book will say it's hard to put down. Don't miss this good chance to read this outstanding book.

Pedro's Journal for 5th grade Class
Pedro's Journal was read by my 5th grade classes to learn more about Christopher Columbus and his journey. It was perfect for a class of mixed ability readers, it's history was well researched, and it engaged the students. We used it for a Literary Circle book. I highly recommend it for Social Studies, Language Arts, or an example of journal writing.

Bringing Columbus' voyage to life for students
I read selections of this book out loud to my fifth grade Hispanic students who were intrigued with the young sailor and his experiences. It lent a "you were there" aspect to the study of history and it provided a model of diary style writing. This book was recommended by our history series.

The Portuguese Columbus: Secret Agent of King John II
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (June, 1992)
Authors: Mascarenhas Barreto, Reginald A. Brown, and Maxcarenhas Barreto
Average review score:

The truth milord, the truth only.
There are really no adequate adjectives to label this work. This breakthrough work of art is a fantastic challenge to all historians that ever dared to whisper the word Columbus in their thoughts. It is obvious that the so-called professional historian community is not going to like what Barreto explains with extraordinary detail because they would only be achknowledging their own ignorance. There is a multibillion dollar industry living under the myth of a Genoese Columbus and offering false documents to prove it. There are books based on those false documents written by people with "a name" in the historian community begging the public to perpetuate the lie because in all honesty, they can't sleep at night with their hard pillow filled with corrupted cash. To date no historian has successfully challenged Mr. Barreto's arguments. Why? I tell you why. Because Mr. Barreto is most probably right and all those Samuel Morisons out there will die first before they admit to it.

Intrigue, adventure, politics, & history. An amazing book!
The amazing investigative work of Barreto proves Columbus was (1) a spy, (2) Portuguese (NOT Italian), and (3) JEWISH! Barreto breaks the secret code of Columbus' signature and exposes the explorer's covert life. The book is filled with history, adventure, politics, and intrigue. THE MISSION: To foil Spain's quest for India. THE REWARD: Discovery of a New World and Portugal's rise as a global power. The author examines the circumstances which led to the oppression of Jews in Europe, and how this forced secrecy gave Columbus the opportunity to become one of the greatest covert agents in history. The discoveries in this book are so astounding, one wonders why this book is not getting greater attention. This book is intensely satisfying. The amount of information in the book is so vast, you have to read it more than once; but you'll love every minute of it!

Columbus' history rewritten
I found the theses presented in this book fascinating and very thoroughly argued. Much of the evidence is very convincing. Some has been available before, but a great deal is new, specially the part on decyphering the cabalistic signature. I am puzzled by the lack of response from the history experts.

Saga America: A Startling New Theory on the Old World Settlement of America Before Columbus
Published in Paperback by Times Books (September, 1983)
Author: Barry Fell
Average review score:

This is A Must Read
I am sad to see that most of Barry Fell's work is either out of print or going out of print. If you think you have American pre-history "wired", you better think again. This is not pseudo-history; it is the work of a chair of University history department and it is based on well-founded research and documentation. Forget the "Siberian Ice Bridge" and other things that are the distant past and consider the evidence for Libyan sailors on the Mississippi River - and Hebraic script transcriptions in a "prehistoric" cave in Los Lunas, New Mexico - I could just go on and on.... in short - get this before it cannot be had anymore. I am just amazed that such things go out of print....

Great praise is due for this work.
I worked with the author of Saga America because I lived nearby one on the sites he discussed, the source for the INYO ZODIAC. Originally, I was quite skeptical, but became convinced that Fell was correct. Besides the recognition of the Zodiac, Fell also found a notation that seemed to refer to the Vernal Equinox. That led to the discovery of the functions of a complete solar observatory. This book is a true landmark in epigraphic research. The good Professor Fell is no longer with us, but this book will help his memory last forever.

Fell's work is perhaps the most important in this field
Barry Fell's 3 books on European and Mediterreanian peoples exploration/colonization of North America are the best and most important work on this subject I've ever seen. I am trying to find copies of Saga America and Bronze Age America, having purchased America B.C. a few years back. It isn't politically correct writing that he did, but it was all true.

Administrator's Guide to e-Commerce
Published in Hardcover by Delmar Learning (01 July, 1999)
Author: Louis Columbus
Average review score:

Tutorials on Setting A Strategy Helpful
There are many books out today on e-commerce, yet I found this book easy to read and easy to follow for getting a framework for organizing all the aspects of e-business. The book is focused on the needs of administrators wanting to understand why e-business and more specifically, e-commerce matters. It's a quick read and makes e-commerce make sense.

My own store? Selling software and music?
What I found the best about this book is that the topic of electronic software distribution, and the hands-on tools and relationships you need are defined. Also the chapter on how all the parts of e-commerce fit together was pretty good. I think the author probably lives in this world and tends to use too many acronyms. I think having the book more focused on the hands-on aspects of managing a site would make this perfect for the beginner. Overall the book is written more like you were talking to the author - it does not preach and it tries to be helpful. I have also e-mailed the author and he's been quick to respond with answers.

Great Book!
This book provides a great foundation for the classes I am teaching in e-commerce. It's chapters on site server also are excellent! I found the fundamentals section to be outstanding for handling the task of getting new students up to speed.

Dreaming of Columbus : A Boyhood in the Bronx
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (April, 1999)
Author: Michael Pearson
Average review score:

Fabulous!
I just finished reading Michael Pearson's "Dreaming of Columbus." It is such a delightful reading experience that I was sad to see it end. His poignant remembrances of his childhood are written with such skill and pathos that I was deeply moved. Also, his comedic mastery is a wonderful tool that he uses so subtly that I laughed out loud at some of the recollections. All in all, this was the best book I've read all year.....he's a fabulous writer! Mary Ann Wilson

Loved it - Full of Laughter and full of exitement!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I, also being Catholic, could relate to the mysteries surrounding "A Nun's Habit" and the almighty ruler. It was enlightening reading about "tricks" boys played and looking back into the 60's & 70's when all was innocent and pranks were silly. The rememberence of the corner drug store and the friends in the neighborhood who felt like a part of your family. The tightly knit friends who went with you through all the ups and downs and growing through the changes in childhood to adolescence; the finally figuring out "what I want to be" and the many roads in life you took to get there. The book was well-written and the expressions that surfaced will stay with me for a long, long time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kudos to Pearson!

Excerpts from Port Folio Weekly review
Norfolk's Port Folio Weekly reviewed this book and said: "For Pearson, the world was dominated by the Bronx. And in this beautifully crafted memoir, he has brought that world to life.

His recollections of his literary experiences -- set against his memories of everday life on the street -- create a tension that is sustained throughout the book. One gets the impression that he was forever torn between the small world in which he lived and the wide world of his book-fueled imagination.

Dreaming of Columbus gives us a brilliantly detailed picture of one boy's life in the Bronx. But to a great extent, it also transcends the particulars of time and place. Regardless of where you grew up, this is a book that will help you see your own past in new ways."

It All Started With Columbus, Being 961-
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill (June, 1961)
Author: Richard Willard Armour
Average review score:

Very funny
Although not as good as his "Twisted Tales from Shakespeare" and "The Classics Reclassified," this volume is still a funny overview of American History.

When History Cross-breeds with Humor
This book is, quite simply, a masterpiece of American humor. However, the same can be said of most of Richard Armour's books, including such classics as "It All Started With Marx," "English Lit Relit," "Twisted Tales From Shakespeare" (with its classic description of Hamlet entering 'with his nose in a book, perhaps to keep his place'), and of course "The Classics Reclassified." This is the cream of the crop, which is saying a lot given the quality of the crop. Starting with Christopher Columbus and working his way into the twentieth century, Armour has combined great scholarship with a wild sense of humor (Explorers returned with "Chinaware from China, Indiaware from India, and Underware from Down Under") to make an indelible mark on the study of history. And it will contribute to the reader's knowledge, because you will grasp obscure facts better by virtue of Armour's jokes. This has been one of my favorite books for many years, and it is WELL WORTH finding in a library or a book-finding service; the history buff will want to re-read it frequently for a good laugh!

American Hystery
If you are a History fan, you MUST read this, and any of the other books by Richard Armour. You will DEFINITELY look at America in a Whole NEW light...even if this book IS out of print! Maybe we can start a movement to have his stuff brought back! It is a CLASSIC in the True sense of the word. I especially love the description about Davy Crockett.. "He wore a Coonskin Cap and Bucksin Coat -but it never says wether or not he wore pants..."

The Tainos: Rise & Decline of the People Who Greeted Columbus
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (May, 1992)
Author: Irving Rouse
Average review score:

Opus Magnus
When writting this book, Dr. Rouse put a lifetime of research and studies on the Indians of the Caribbean into one work.
Since Rouse is considered the "Dean of Caribbean Archaeology", this book is a "must have" for anyone interested in the region and its native inhabitants.
Very few people have worked for so long, in so many locations and with such dedication as Dr. Rouse.

Didn't want it to end
This book is great. Very informative and well written. I learned a great deal about my cultue, heritage and ancestry. It left me with a thirst for more.

Exceptional Book! A MUST READ!
There were so many things of the Taino Indians I didn't know about and this book gives such a wonderful view of their lives and heritage you think they were your neighbors next door! This book makes you realize how important it is to keep your heritage alive.
